WHO DUNNIT? 4

Christian screamed and fell to the ground with a loud thud after the reptile had extracted its fangs from his flesh.

His pulse was racing.

Christian hated the fact that he knew what was coming.He'd watched enough documentaries to know the effects of a fierce snake bite.

 First would come the nausea,then the vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dizziness and convulsions leading to kidney  failure and finally death.

He could already feel the nausea coming on.His blood would slowly loose its ability to clot and he'd bleed out.

Bad way to go,he thought.



He'd always secretly hoped to go during a threesome.At least then he'd die naked with a smile on his face.

This was a sh**ty way to go.

Eva caught movement under the couch as the large reptile swiftly retreated from the light.

"Jesus!!!.....Its under the couch....the snake is under the couch!!!"she screamed.

Victor in panic ran into the centre table,shattering the glass and falling over.

"Where is it?? where's the damn thing??" Bola's voice was frantic.

Christian was left by himself....still groaning on the floor.

Victor scrambled to his feet, eyes frantic as he scanned the floor for the snake.

"This is crazy....where the hell is it?"he said.

Christian was still groaning in pain.

"We have to help him!!!"Bola panted.

But none of them moved.

"....help me....." Christian was groaning.

"We need to put pressure on the wound to prevent the venom from spreading it may already be too late.....I read somewhere  that it is possible to suck out the venom from a wound seconds after a bite" Victor was speaking very fast as the panic in his voice rose.

"I'm not going any where near that couch.Not with that thing slithering about ."Eva said with a small voice.

"Christ! He's YOUR boyfriend!!!"Victor  exclaimed.

"And it's a very poisonous snake,what's your point?"

He kept on staring at her with a mixture of disbelief and disgust.

Long pause.

More groaning from Christian.

"Get me a knife" Victor said softly.

Bola was frozen.It seemed her mind was trying  to process what was happening.

Christian was whimpering now.The sounds from him were faint.

"Get me a knife....a  sharp one!!!"Victor shouted suddenly with  anger in his voice.

Bola snapped out of her trance and rushed to the kitchen door.She threw a tearful glance in Peter's direction as she did.

Long pause as Victor and Eva watched Christian in silence.

They were silent for a long time while Bola scuttled about noisily in the Kitchen.

"This has gone too far, Eva" Victor's voice said in a low tone.

"I told you it was necessary" Eva replied evenly.

Neither of them stared at each other as Christian continued groaning.

"...so you did this.....?"Victor said staring at her with the same look of shock and disgust.

".....is that why you wanted both of us to search downstairs,....why you insisted on searching the living room by yourself,so you could release the snake?.....how could you....he is your boyfriend for Christ's sake."

"If you weren't so careless with Habiba maybe I wouldn't be doing this" Eva said calmly.

Victor drew in close to her and whispered with a lot of rage.

"I told you it was an accident, she caught me stealing the diamonds from her dad's safe.I tried to reason with her, but she threatened to go to the police.You've heard the rumors of my financial troubles" Victor said in a hushed tone as he stared at Christian.

Christian was silent now.Save for the occasional spasm and convulsing.

"I don't give a crap about your financial issues...."Eva snapped as she stared him down.

"....You were sloppy with killing Habiba....you were stupid enough to leave the second key inside the bathroom in plain sight. Luckily for you, I was there to save the day....or night in this case"She whispered almost playfully.

Long pause.

"Bola has to die,"Eva said simply.

Victor's expression of shock was almost comical.

"...what is wrong with you?Talking about murder as if it were nothing.Somehow you managed to poison Peter,set a Venomous snake loose that bit your boyfriend and now you're talking  about killing Bola?....I want no part of ....."

"There's no turning back now you idiot,...the killing can't stop....In another few minutes the shutters should deactivate and we'll be home free with the diamonds" She spat as she stared at him with a strange coldness in her eyes.

They heard movement behind them.
"...You...killed Habiba...?" came Bola's petrified voice .

Time froze.

Victor and Eva continued staring at each other as if holding their breaths.

Long pause.

"....Eva....what's going on.....?"Her voice was scarcely above a whisper .

"...Run...."came Christian's whimper.

They all turned to stare at him as he extended a weakened arm in Bola's direction.

"...r.run...."

His voice was barely audible and his face seemed like it was enduring intense agony.

Eva rolled her eyes and walked towards Bola.
"..well...lets put it this way...."Eva said almost playfully as Bola held the carving knife close to her body and retreated a few steps.

"..Victor here,is a thief. He planned on robbing his girlfriend of her father's diamonds.So....after trying for months to get the combination to her dad's safe.He finally succeeded and proceeded to extract the diamonds while she slept"

Victor shifted uncomfortably.His eyes darting around the room nervously.

"....guess what happened?" Eva continued.

"....Dear Habiba wakes up and freaks out when she finds the love of her life trying to rob her. She felt betrayed and threatened to go to the police. Of course, that was after Habiba had activated the shutters. Well, according to what he told me while we searched the house,there was a struggle.And that's when wonder boy here panicked and slit her throat with her Dad's army knife."

"Oh God!" Bola gasped as she covered her mouth with her hand.

" ...and it gets better,....the idiot panics some more, leaves the door ajar....which I thought was genius by the way.Then he takes the knife into the bathroom,washes and hides it inside the towel basket and oh yeah! the bathroom door had two keys.So boy wonder throws one into the bedroom  and then locks himself up inside with the other one"

Eva started laughing.

Both Bola and Victor stare at her with fear in their eyes.

She laughed some more.The sound was creepy inside the stillness of the room.

"While we were in the room,I spotted the other key inside the bathroom,along with tiny drops of blood he'd missed....."

Eva remembers how she was the one to catch up on Victor's game in the bedroom.

Eva coming  over to Victor in the bedroom and places what looked like a comforting hand on his shoulder. 

"what are you doing" Christian
 was saying as he eyed the two of them suspiciously.

"Cut it out Christian...she's only comforting a guy who just lost his girl friend"Bola said
But Eva wasn't offering words of comfort.She bent over to whisper into his ear,
"Act normal......,"She began

".....I know you killed her...and I know you probably did it because of the diamonds.You left the second key on the floor in the bathroom.Even from here,I can see droplets of blood around it....you either agree to share the diamonds with me, or I tell everyone..nod if you agree."

Victor nodded with a lot of fear in his eyes.
Eva smiled.

"I'll dispose of the key.Just remember our deal."she whispered as she walked towards the bathroom door.

"Where are you going?"Christian asked alarmed.

Eva enters
the bathroom,and casually picks up the key and throws it into the toilet bowl.

She looks over her shoulder, and wipes the blood on the floor.And Flushes the toilet.


She is brought back to the present by Bola.

"Jesus!!!"Bola said as she continued her retreat away from Eva and Victor.

"So....what about...?"Bola began as her eyes went to the bodies on the ground.

"Oh!....them?"Eva began.Still as playful as ever.
You see,I knew it was only a matter of time before Victor slipped up and did something stupid again.

"So....I released the snake while we were searching the living room...it was a long shot I know....I mean,it could've bitten ANY ONE!!"
Eva seemed to be enjoying herself as she approached Bola slowly.

Victor's eyes strayed to Christian's body.

Christian was motionless.

Bola  suddenly had a curious look on her face as she stared at Victor.

"...poisoning Peter was easy,though I intended  killing Christian but at least I had one last person to worry about."Eva continued gingerly.

"Fifty million dollars is still a lot of money for three to share....the real question now is....are you with us or against us Bola? Think really carefully, you need the money."

For the longest time,Bola was silent.

She seemed to be pondering her situation carefully.

Her hand tightened on the handle of the knife. A tiny bead of sweat crept down her forehead as her eyes nervously darted from Bola to Victor...and back again.

Long pause.

"I've lived in the shadow of abuse and humiliation long enough.But I knew  Christian had rich friends....I knew my suffering would pay off one day and I'd cash in.Do you have any Idea what it's like dating a monster like Christian or watching spoilt brats like Habiba flaunt wealth in your face?....So what's it going to be,are you with us or not?"Eva yelled.

Long silence.

"If I say no.....? She began cautiously.

Eva smiled and casually turned to look at the bodies of Christian and back at Bola again.

"Then...you're no use to us"Eva said simply.

Bola was silent again for a while.Eva was standing really close to her now.

"I have a question for you"Bola began
"where did you find the poison to put in the soup?"

Eva suddenly had a curious look on her face.

"Damnest thing.....found a bunch of opened cyanide capsules just lying there in the kitchen cupboard when we were searching the house....I mean who would keep stuff like that in a kitchen?....I'm sure you must've seen them while you were preparing the soup and......."Eva's voice trailed off as a sudden realization dawned on her.

Bola stepped forward and plunged the knife into Eva's stomach.

A painful gasp escaped Eva's lips as Bola extracted the blade forcefully and stabbed her again.

Victor's face was a mask of shock as Bola stabbed her again.

"....You..."Eva managed as she slowly slumped to the floor with a startled expression on her face.

"...You're dumber than you look..."Bola began with a steel expression on her face.

"....Habiba was my best friend for many years....did you think Victor just happened to have combination of the safe.....?"

Eva continued to slip to the floor slowly as her weakened fingers attempted to grip the sides of Bola's arms.

Eva hit the floor with the blood still oozing out of her chest.Her eyes still held their shocked gaze.

Long silence.

Bola bent forward and wiped the blade on the body of the lifeless girl.

She turned to Victor with a hateful stare.

"....all you had to do,was wait for me to bring the soup.If Habiba had taken the soup none of this would've happened.Do you realise how hard it was to get those cyanide pills?"
"Baby...I ...."Victor began awkwardly.

"Dont you baby me...."Bola spat viciously waving the knife at him.

"....I endured being your sidechick for months.I even endured dating Peter even if I didn't love him.After months of planning, all we had to do was poison Habiba,wait for the cyanide to take effect,grab the diamonds and leave before anyone noticed.We would've been halfway across the Country by now....and no one else would be dead."

Victor was silent.He stared in horror at the lifeless bodies of his friends strewn across the floor.

"..I'm sorry..."

"You're sorry?.....You're sorry???"Bola screamed.

"...Peter was unlovable,but he did'nt deserve to die .....How the hell did Eva get mixed up in our plans?....look at this mess!"she said looking about in disgust.

Long pause.

"Where are the diamonds?"She demanded.
"...They're in the towel basket in the bathroom....please baby I'm sorry"

In that instant, there was a beep and the shutters were activated.

Long pause as the sound filled the house.

"..go get them....we're leaving"She said still staring at the bodies.

Victor gave her an awkward smile then raced up the stairs.

Bola was left alone with the corpses of her friends.

Victor was too impulsive,she thought.
Lover or not,she would have to dispose of him somehow.

But first they had to leave this place.

Too bad.She thought.

She really thought they'd be together forever.

Too bad.
