EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

She heard a bang. She jumped in her seat and made a Typo in the document she was working on.She looked at her wrist watch, 11:23pm. She sighed and looked around her.

She was the only one in the office, thanks to her shrewish boss and her Employee-of-the-month-for-Eight-straight-months status. She wished she had had the guts to turn down this assignment.

So here she was, at this unholy hour, with an aching neck, back, arms, legs, aching everywhere.

She stood up from her desk, and flexed her muscles.

Strange how quiet the office was.

It was usually a mad house during Office Hours. She picked her flask and realized it was empty.

Her throat was parched.

She reached under her desk for her shoes, then decided against it. She didn’t need the heels echoing in the silence.

She walked to the Dispenser in the kitchenette and drank some water. Then she heard....no, felt movement behind her and turned around.

A tiny tremor ran through her.

“Hello! Anybody there?” her voice sounded alien to her.

No response.

But she could've sworn something moved behind her.

The hairs on her arms stood.

Stop being paranoid… she scolded herself, venturing out of the kitchenette and looking down the hall way.

Nothing stirred.

She turned towards her office.

Immediately, she heard a loud banging sound coming from the hallway.

 She froze.

She pushed her legs to walk faster.

She entered her office and shut the door.

She knew she wasn't alone.

She closed her eyes, standing by her door and tried to steady her breathing.

"Oh Jesus!!!"she gasped.

Her sudden fright wasn't because the documents strewn across the floor.

There was blood everywhere.

Over the documents scattered across the floor and on her computer screen.

Her first instinct was to run but her legs suddenly seemed frozen in place.

"Just turn around, and go...."She heard her own voice whisper.

She turned around slowly and broke into a run.

She ran towards the elevator doors. Her heart was pounding in her chest.

She stabbed her finger into the elevator door buttons.....the feeling of being watched was strong. There was someone here.

Then she something.

Taped to one of the buttons was a picture.

A picture of her.

It was from her First year with the Company.

She remembered that day vividly. But her eyes had been removed from the picture, and there was blood on it, like the blood was coming out of her mouth.

"What de F**k???"

Then came the scrapping sound.

At first it was faint....then slowly it became louder.

It was getting closer.

HIDE!!!.Her instincts screamed.

She ran down the hallway, towards her boss’ office. She hurriedly opened the door and slammed it behind her.

More terror gripped her when she turned around to see....

 Her boss

She was seated on her chair, with her head bowed towards her chest.

The source of the blood. Her eyes were opened and unseeing, her neck had been slashed and blood soaked her white silk blouse, which had been pristine this morning.

Her mouth was open in a grotesque manner as if she'd been suddenly frozen in mid-scream.

And there was a smell… the horrible stench in the air. She wanted to puke, she ran towards the toilet in the office, and let out the sandwich she had had that evening.

She slumped to the cold tiles shivering, wondering what the F**k was going on.

Then adrenaline spurred her, and she began her search for a place to hide. She ran back to the door of the office, and gently opened it and she saw him, a man in a long trench coat and a hat. He hadn’t seen her, or so she hoped.

She was stuck inside with the corpse.

She looked around the office, and the only thing that was remotely dangerous, was the stapler on the desk. She ran towards the table, looking for a pen with an appropriate tip.

Being so close to the corpse, made her head spin, and she grabbed the desk for support.

Her gaze settled on the Chinese style hairpins in her boss’ hair, and she pulled both of them out. They had very sharp tips…. Perfect.

The she ran to the sofa, and hid behind it.

Long pause.

The door to the office slowly opened, and the man walked in. He was at least 6'1 and had a machete in his hands.

The Blade made a scrapping sound against the floor.

He looked around the office, as though sensing her presence. He sniffed the air, and walked towards the toilet, where the WC was still refilling its tank with water.

Busted.

The man turned around and began searching the large office.

She realised she was holding her breath.

He suddenly turned towards the couch and flung it aside as he if were tossing aside a waste paper basket.

The large piece of furniture crashed into the side of a nearby wall.

She was exposed.

He had a creepy smile on his face…. a very familiar face...but she couldn't place it.

Why couldn't she remember?

Maybe it was the adrenaline,or maybe it was the sight of blood.Or maybe it was just the big creepy guy with a f**king machete that clearly wanted to kill her.

Yeah,that had to be it.

“Please… don’t hurt me… please” she pleaded.

He grabbed her by the neck and pulled her up.

She screamed and struggled but the dude had the grip of a Grizly Bear.

She raised her hand, and plunged the Chinese hair pins into his left eye with as much strength as she could muster.

There was a loud Popping sound .........and then he screamed.

He let go of her.

She fell to the floor.

She ran out of the office towards the stairs.

She opened the door to the stairway, and ran right into the man. She screamed and he lifted her off the floor and threw her over the rails to the stairs. She screamed all the way down the six floors.........

.....Then she woke up.

Her heart was still racing and she could still hear her own screams in her head.

But it was just a dream.

She was sitting up on her bed staring at the Casio Clock on her dresser.

6:05AM.

Her Iphone was blinking.

She reached for it.

An SMS from her shrewish boss.

My favourite Employee, you may have to work extra hours today.Have some tricky documents for you to work on.Being Employee of the month,I'm sure this shouldn't be a problem for you.
Best Regards
Your Boss.

She could see and hear fragments of the nightmare, as her trembling fingers held the phone.
