HOUSE FOR SALE

2012

HOUSE FOR SALE,
6 bedroom duplex with three living rooms, seven baths fitted with jacuzzis, a garden, two water fountains, sitting on six acres of land.
asking price 10million naira.

Ngo was pleased, she stroked the curtains which her husband had just hung up. Light shimmered in through the windows. She spinned around dreamily. Her kids would absolutely love their new home. She loved the renovation work that had gone on. The property had been restored but it still had most of it's original woodwork and furniture.

She wondered why nobody had bought this house until she and her husband had come across it. From the moment they set their eyes on it, they knew it was the one. And they got it for such a bargain. They were expecting to pay at least five times the asking price.
The front door opened and she heard a shriek... Her kids were home.

Judith ran down the stairs to the kitchen "mummy junior just ate a cockroach" she screamed. Her mother looked at her "Don't tell tales about your brother Judith" she replied.

"It is true" came Jude's voice from up the stairs. Ngo looked at her daughter, her six years old twins were known to be mischievious. They had lived in the house for a week now, and due to the large space in the house, they didn't get into each other's hair and they house had been peaceful.

"Where did he get the cockroach he ate? There are no roaches in this house" she dismissed her. Junior was four years old, and well behaved.

"He just....." A scream and a thud interuppted Judith. They ran up they stairs together.

Junior was lying on the floor in their room, and his body was having spasms. Ngo screamed and held her child, while his siblings watched on, obviously frightened.

"Get me my phone...." Ngo screamed.

Ngo watched Junior keenly as he ran around the garden with a kite. After yesterday's incident, she didn't let him out of her sight. The doctor had said he was alright, because by the time they got to the hospital, he had simply seemed to be sleeping.

Junior sat on the ground, and talked to his friend. He liked his friend very much. He looked up and saw his mum staring at him. His friend whispered into his ears, and he laughed.

Ngo watched Junior laugh, and wondered since when he started talking to himself. She went to him. "Baby who are you talking to?" she asked him.

He put his hands to his lips and made a sign for her to be quiet. Then he pointed and said "Micheal.....My friend Micheal"

Ngo looked in the direction he pointed, but saw nobody. She looked at her son, and he smiled at her so innocently. She stood up.

Jake walked into his house, and a shiver ran through his spine. His kids saw him, and ran to give him hugs. He saw a fourth child, about Junior's age standing by the stairs and staring at him. In a blink, child was gone. He was dressed in girl's clothes.

The family was having dinner, on the ornate dining table which was part of the original pieces in the house. The chandalier above the table started blinking, and the table started shaking, falling the glasses to the ground. Judith screamed and everyone was frightened but Junior sat there with a calm smile on his face.

"Strange things are happening in this house" Jake told his wife as they prepared for bed. She dismissed his worries, saying maybe it was an earthquake.
Earthquakes do not happen in Nigeria but Jake dropped the subject.

Ngo opened her eyes, the room was pitch black. Her husband stirred by her side. Something had woken her up, but she didn't know what it was. She heard footsteps running through the corridor, and the curtains to the windows were opened. A ray of moonlight, and Ngo saw a woman standing by the window, looking out to the street. The woman waved to someone outside, and turned around. Ngo shut her eyes tightly.

The woman walked to her side of the bed, and peered into her face. Ngo did not open her eyes, but she could smell her. Ngo smelled death. The woman walked through the door, and Ngo heeved a sigh of relief.

Jude stood up sleepily and made his way to the toilet. He opened the door, and saw the boy in a yellow dress, sitting on the toilet seat. Jude's mouth fell agape and he screamed.

Ngo and Jake ran into the children's room, and saw Jude dangling like a rag doll in the air. A strange boy about Junior's age sat on the toilet seat, with an angry face. Juditha had woken up, and was shaking on her bed. Junior was not in the room.

Then the woman glided into the room, holding Junior's hands. Ngo started crying. "Who are you? Leave us alone.... leave my children alone" she screamed launching at the woman. Jake tried to hold her back, but the moment she touched Junior, an electric spark sent both of them flying in different directions.

Juditha screamed "Jesus!!" and Jude fell to the ground lifeless. The woman and the strange boy disappered.

Three days later, the family sat around Jude's bed in a hospital, he was in a coma. Ngo had a plaster caste on her right arm, which she had dislocated due to the fall. They all looked shaken. All but junior that is. Junior had been behaving like he was a machine in motion.

The doctors had examined him, and said he was perfectly healthy. Ngo was worried. Junior had this dazed look on his face. Jude coughed and the machines attached to him started beeping. He was awake.

Finally they called their pastor. They hadn't been in church for a while, but this was the last resort. The pastor knocked on the door of their suite in a hotel, and Ngo opened the door.
"Why are you here with him? Who are you?" he asked looking in Junior's direction.
Without even a hello to the rest of them, he began praying.

Junior stood up and walked towards the pastor with a defiant look in his eyes "leave my friend alone" he said in a voice not entirely his. The pastor lay the Bible on his forehead, and he fell to the ground.

He began convulsing, and shaking. His family watched in fright as nails began falling out of his mouth.

She looked outside the window, it was quiet outside. It was quiet inside. The child stared at the knife in his mother's hands, blood dripped to the tiled floor. A fly buzzed by the window, the knife slashed through the air and the fly fell to the ground. The child picked up the fly, put it into his mouth, chewed and swallowed.

The clock chimed six times and breakfast was served. Mother used the good china. Through out dinner, nobody spoke a word. Mother combed father's hair, and the boy watched as the hair left his scalp and clung to the comb. Some fell into his soup, but mother didn't mind, neither did father. He finished his dinner and mother excused him from the table.

He went up the dark stairs, and into the even darker hallway. He closed his ears with his hands as he passed by the door yet he heard the whispers. He stopped and reached for the knob. As his hands closed over the knob, a hand reached out to grab him through the door, with a screech. He stepped backwards and clutched the silver cross hanging on his neck.

She hummed as she sat her husband in the parlour. She put his cigar in his hands and lit it. Then she sat on her rocking chair, stoked the fire and looked over at her husband. A worm crawled out of his eye socket and she reached over, picked it off his face and put it in the plate on the table. The plate was full of worms. She continued humming and set to work knitting mittens for her daughter.

The light flickered in the room and the child was one the floor tossing and turning in evident anguish. Mother knelt by his side and wiped his brow with a cloth. Her lips moved silently as she prayed for her daughter. His face contorted and his mouth opened. Mother pinned him down, as he thrashed around violently. Then with a high pitched screech, she was flung like a rag doll into the air, to a wall, then unto the floor. The child slowly ascended, mid air until he was standing on air. Then his eyes went open. Mother screamed "NO!!"

The sun was rising, and the child opened the front door. He was dressed for school, and ran to the curb where the school bus was waiting. He looked back at the house, looking to the window of the parlour where mother stood. He waved at her and got into the bus.

A worm slithered out of mother's mouth, and fell into a plate on the floor. She was swollen and putrid, she had been dead for 8days......
